Subject:

DIESEL GENERATOR SCAVENGING AIR BLO'/ER FAILURE On February 19, 1986, the licensee informed NRC Region I of a potential 10 CFR 21 report regarding the emergency diesel generator (DG) aluminum scavenging air blower.

On January 24, 1986, the E-2 DG scavenging air blower failed after 51 hours5.902778e-4 days
0.0142 hours
8.43254e-5 weeks
1.94055e-5 months
of continuous operation at low load (see daily report of January 27,1985). The vendce, Fairbanks Morse, reports the blower was not designed for low or no load conditions and should not be operated under those conditions in excess of a few minutes. A similar failure occurred at Duane Arnold in June 1984 and was the subject of two Fairbanks Morse service information letters which recommended annual internal tolerance checks and cautioned against no load operation. The Peach Bottom E-2 OG failed blower was replaced with a modified blower with larger internal tolerances. The licensee is continuing the evaluation of the failure.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been nntified.
