FIRE IN THE UNIT 3 TURBINE BUILDING At 6:40 p.m. on March 4, 1987 smoke was reported in the Unit 3 turbine building. A fire was found in a maintenance cage in the turbine building fan room. The plant fire and damage team extinguished the fire without offsite assistance. An Unusual Event was declared at 7:15 p.m. because the fire was in the Protected Area and required more than 10 minutes to extinguish. The Unusual Event was terminated at 7:25 p.m. The licensee cade an ENS call and contacted the Senior Resident Inspector. The SRI responded to the site. On March 5,1987 a regional specialist was dispatched to the site. The PECo Fire Marshall investigated the fire early on March 5, and determined the cause to be a small electrical fan that was suspended from the cage. It was not known how long it had been running. Damage was confined to the cage area. No safety related equipment was involved, however the cage area is a posted contaminated area. No radioactivity release occurred. Smoke was cleared with normal ventilation. Unit 2 was at 85% power and Unit 3 at 100% power throughout the event. There was no affect on operation of oither unit.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has been informed.
