Subject:
UNPLANNED SHUTDOWN IN EXCESS OF 48 HOURS Peach Bottom Unit 3 scrammed from 86% power at 2:54 a.m. on March 17, 1987 due to Average Power Range Monitor (APRM) high high flux. Electro Hydraulic Control (EHC) system fluctuations caused the turbine control valves to oscillate which resulted in a reactor pressure increase and high high APRM flux scram. No ECCS were initiated. A group II and III primary containment isolation occurred, which was reset. System re-sp:nse following the scram was normal. The Itcensee made an ENS call and notified the Senior Resident Inspector. The unit is in cold shutdown to repair a leak in the C2 feedwater heater, perform other maintenance and investigate the EHC system malfunction.
The Itcensee plans to remain shut down for about five days.
