System TT/F8)

On October E8, 1987, CECO gave a presentation to the NRC inspector on

the operation of the I/98. However, when it was t're for the

demonstration of the I/98 on a 29" Main Loop weld, electrical problems

with a cable resulted in the demonstration being delayed to a future

date.

In discussions with CECO personnel it was learned that on October 27,

, 1987, CE UT'd a weld on a mock-up using the I/98. The I/98 consists of '

a scanner and scan controller, four-channel data acquisition system,

'

fully progrannable ultrasonic front end, data storage, and an analysis

system.

. .

A 45 refracted longitudinal beam with a variable roof angle and j

rectangular crystals was selected. These transducers were specially.

designed for these materials and are zoned to-the appropriate examination

depth. ,

l

The' scanning subsysten onsisted of a scanner and search unit, scan

controller, and guide track assembly. The pipe scanner can be operated

automatically or manually. For manual operation, a joystick may be

located in either the examination area or the control area.

The flexible, mild-steel, scanner guide track (sector-type or 360 type)

adapts to surfaces of virtually any geometry and curvature. The scanner

wheels are fabricated of material that magnetically couples to the

track.

Additionally, CE has inspected a Static Cast Stainless Steel (SCSS) elbow

at a U.S. utility for evidence.of fatigue cracking. The inspection was

performed in accordance with ASME Section XI, and the effected area of

the elbow was scanned in four directions. The reference sensitivity was

estaolish.ed from the calibration block using side drilled holes and the

ID notch. Both the calibration block and elbow were constructed from

SA-351-CF8M material . The calibration block was 3.0" thick and the

elbow ranged from 3" - 4" thick. During the elbow scanning, midwall

and 10 surface reflections were detected and recorded. All of the

reflectors were verified by manual techniques. CE's technique was able

to penetrate the material and was able to monitor the OD interface

and ID signals simultaneously while scanning. All the elbow scanning

was: witnessed by site QA and monitored (100%) by IPRI NDE Center

personnel. The techniques have been evaluated by EPRI and have proven

to be effective.

No violations or deviations were identified.

3. Exit Interview ) I

The inspector met with site representative (denoted in Persons Contacted

paragraph) at the conclusion of the inspect 1on. The inspector summarized l

the scope and findings of the inspection noted in this report. The J

inspector also discussed the likely informational content of the

inspection report with regard to documents or processes reviewed by the

inspection during the inspection. The licensee did not identify any such

documents / processes as proprietary.
