Mr. James G. Keppler Regional Administrator U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region III 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ell.yn, IL 60137 ULNRC- 716
Dear Mr. Keppler:
INTERIM 10CFR50.55 (e)/21 REPORT NO. U-C5 CALLAWAY PLANT UNIT 1 __
On November 23, 1983, Union Electric reported a 10CFR 50.55(e)/21 deficiency to Paul Pelke, NRC Region III. The deficiency involves the failure of a mechanical interlock on ITE Gould Motor Control Center two-speed starters for Contain-ment Cooling Fan Motors.
The failure involves the sticking and unreliable operation of the mechanical interlock between the 42T and 42S contactors in all four fan motor starters. This condition could prevent the fans from transferring from high speed (normal condition) to low speed (LOCA condition).
Union Electric has requested Bechtel to provide infor-mation on the failure and to determine if a generic problem exists with the mechanical interlock. ITE Gould will be con-tacted to provide information pertinent to the failure. A final report on this issue is expected to be submitted within 90 days of the date of this letter.
Very truly yours, P
