Keppler Regional Administrator, Region III U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 799 Roosevelt Road Glen Ellyn, Illinois 60137 Mr. John T. Collins Regional Administrator, Region IV U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Suite 1000, Parkway Central Plaza Arlington, Texas 76012 Docket Nos. STN 50-482 and STN 50-483 Gentlemen:
Pursuant to the requirements of 10CFR50.55(e), Mr. W. A. Crossman, NRC Region IV, was notified by R. P. White, SNUPPS Staff via telecon on April 19, 1984, of a potential significant deficiency involving Limitorque Model 58-2-80 high torque actuators used in conjunction with four (4) safety-related Westinghouse EMD valves. The deficiency was initially reported to Region III by Union Electric for Callaway. Based on the investigation of damaged gears, set screws, and pinion keys identified during and after startup testing at the Callaway Plant, a determination was made that the deficiency is potentially generic to the Wolf Creek as well as the Cal-laway plant.
To minimize the schedule impact on the1Callaway fuel load, Union Electric elected to replace their Limitorque Model SS-2-80 actuators with fully qualified Limitorque Model 58-1-60 actuators. -A final report outlining details for Callaway only is being finalized by Union Electric. SNUPPS will. follow the generic resolution of this deficiency and provide subse-quent reports to-the NRC on behalf of Wolf Creek. This is as discussed with Mr. Johnson, NRC Region IV, on May 22, 1984.
It is anticipated that a follow-up report will be made within'60 days of ;
^ the date of the, final Callaway report. !
