Docket Nc. 50-483 Callaway Plant Facility Operating License NPF-30 10 CFR Part 21 Report - Room Cooler Vents and Drains On May 8,'1989, it was~ determined that a defect' reportable per 10 CFR Part 21 existed in the design and-construction of safety related room cooler vents and drains. This defect is due to galvanic corrosion of carbon steel vents and drains at the interface with

'90-10 copper-nickel room cooler supply and return headers. The vents and drains are located at the room coolers in the Essential Service Water system. The Essential Service Water system is an'ASME Class 3 system and is designed and constructed in accordance with the requirements of Regulatory Guide 1.29, Rev. 3, Seismic Design Classification.

The room coolers were manufactured by Carrier Corporation in accordance with Bechtel Specification No.-10466-M-612(Q). The room coolers, as supplied, included 1/2 inch carbon steel vent and drain lines which were welded or brazed to the copper-nickel supply and return headers provided by Carrier as part of the room cooler design. A total of 16 room coolers in both trains of the Essential Service Water system were affected.

I Based on inservice leakage on one of the coolers which occurred during the previous fuel cycle, an inspection program was conducted during the current V

ULNRC-2005 Page 2 of 2 refueling outage. Inspection revealed galvanic corrosion of the carbon steel vent and drain line stubs which penetrated through the copper-nickel headers into the flow stream. This corrosion, if undetected and uncorrected, could have eventually affected the integrity of the Essential Service Water system during postulated operational or seismic events. All room cooler vents and drains will be modified during the current refueling cutage to eliminate the carbon steel to copper-nickel interface.
