Dear Mr. Keppler:

FINAL 10CFR50.55(e)/Part 21 REPORT NO. U-44 CALLAWAY PLANT UNIT 1 On November 5, 1982 Union Electric informed by telephone the NRC region III office of a potential 50.55(e)/Part 21 report on General Electric lE 480 Volt AKR Breakers. The problem involves the lever on the closing spring interlock overtraveling the armature linkage pin. The lever then jams and causes the spring interlock mechanism to bend. Eventually the mechanism will bend sufficiently to cause the breaker to fail in mid-travel Union Electric has contacted General Electric about this problem. G.E. has agreed to furnish replacement closing spring interlock levers which have an ear on the end of the lever. This ear will restrict the closing spring interlock lever from overtraveling the armature linkage pin.

It is Union Electric's intention to replace the closing spring interlock lever in all General Electric 480' Volt AKR Breakers. Our schedule for accomplishing this will be dependent upon the delivery of the replacement parts from General Electric and working the replacement effort into normal construction activities.

Very truly yours, J
