Dear Mr. Keppler:

FINAL 10CFR50.55 (e)/PART 21 REPORT NO. U-41 CALLAWAY PLANT UNIT 1 On September 3, 1982 Union Electric advised you of a deficiency reportable under the requirements of 10CFR50.55 (e)/Part 21 regarding the\ possibility of defective potentiometers utilized in circuit boards' supplied to Union Electric by The Foxboro Company.

The suspect potentiometers were utilized during the period December, 1980, (date code 8048) to December, 1981, (date code 8152).

Union Electric has determined that twenty-eight circuit boards have been issued to the field to be used in the Callaway Control Board, but it is not known at this time if these circuit boards are of the batch with the suspect date codes. A search of the Union Electric warehouse yielded five of the circuit boards which contain the suspect components.

At the vendor's request, Union Electric is returning all of the suspect components to the vendor's facilities for .-ework/ replace-ment. This will assure that all components to be used in the l Control Board are of acceptable quality. This work is expected to be completed by January 1, 1983. Union Electric is reporting this deficiency to the NRC rather than evaluate the safety significance i of a failure of this component in all of the possible locations within the Control Board at the Callaway Plant.

i Very truly yours, l

RMD/jds Donald F. Schnell cc: H. M. Wescott, Region III Richard DeYoung, Director I&E NRC Resident Inspector, Callaway Plant Missouri Public Service Commission l
