DUKE POWER COMPANY-OCONEE NUCLEAR STATION UNIT 3 Report Number: R0-287/82-01 Report Date: February 26, 1982 Occ.urrence Date: January 28, 1982 Facility: Oconee Unit 3, Seneca, South Carolina Identification of Occurrence: Borated Water Storage Tank Channel 'B' Level Indication inoperable Conditions Prior to Occurrence: 100% FP Description of Occurrence: On January 28, 1982, the Channel 'B' Borated Water Storage Tank _(BWST) Level Indication was declared inoperable due to erratic. readings.

Apparent Cause of Occurrence: The apparent cause of this incident was dirt and oil in the IcVel indicator booster relay, and high thermostat settings on the system heat trace causing boiling in the impulse lines.

Analysis of Occurrence: BWST Channel 'A' level indication was operable and the BWST water level was maintaired-with the Technical Specification limits throughout this incident,' thus ensuring at. adequate water supply for emergency cooling. The safety of the plant was not degraded and the health _and safety of the public were not affected by this incident.

Corrective Action: The Channel 'B' booster relay was cleaned and the thermostat setting for the heat trace was lowered. The level indication was returned to service.
