Docket No. 50-146 Contaminated Water From the Containment Vessel Sump i

on March 22, 1990, the first quarterly inspection of th'e year'was conducted at the Saxton Nuclear Experimental Corporation (SNEC) Facility. During this-inspection, water was found present in the containment Vessel'(CV)-sump and:a sample was taken for radioisotopic analysis.

3 The results of the analysis were received on May 8,.-1990,and indicated thatt the

(

1 activity concentration of Sr-90, Co-60 and Cs-137-exceeded the " Limits:for:

Unrestricted Release" identified!in 10CFR20, Appendix B, Table II, Column'2, 1 and is reporta'cle Per the TS, under section 5.a.3 of the_SNEC Technical. Specification (TS)..-

reported to Mr. the results of the analysis'for the above isotopes.were verbally .

F. Young (NRC TMI-1 resident laspector) on May BJ 1990.

Mr. Young was also informed that the verbal notification would be followed by the required written report within.15 days.

The attacaed Exhibit water analysis for the 1 identifies first quarter the reportable of'1990. results of the SNEC CV sump It should be noted that the CV sump volume is 325 gallons and was filled with' i approximately 125 gallons of water.  ;

.. e The water in the sump originates from condensation on the inside of the CV, and is a consequence of a breather pipe, installed during the initial decommissioning,-which permits the CV to breathe with changes in atmospheric temperatures.- This water poses no threat _to the environment or to the health and safety of the public because there are no release paths to the external. >

environment from the CV sump. When appropriate, the water will be properly disposed of, as it has been in-the past.

We will continue to periodically monitor, remove and take the appropriate steps l to secure and dispose of this water.  !

This letter comprises the required written report per the SNEC TS section 5.a.-
