I would appreciate it if you would please remove the Council on the Environment's name from your mailing list on notices such as chose attached.

Dear Mr. Ferguson:

This letter confirms a telephone conference held on February 13, 1981 with your Messrs. D. Wood and G. Smith and Leon Engle, project manager for the North Anna Power Station, Units 1 & 2 (NA-1 & 2). In the above noted telecon you were notified that our February 2,1981 request for information regarding the structural integrity of pump nozzles for the Low Hea* Safety Injection (LHSI) system for NA-2 had been resolved and a response by you to this matter was no longer required.

A telephone conference was held on February 12,198) with representatives of the NRC staff, VEPC0 and Stone & Webster (S&W) to discuss our February 2, o

1981 request for verification of the NA-2 LHSI pump nozzle structural, intergrity.

Based on additional information provided by S&W concerning the modeling of the LHSI pump and further re-evaluation on our part, we conclude that the pump nozzles in question will most likely not experience loads which exceed the pump-manufacturers worst case loads.

We, therefore, do not require that the pump manufacturer provide any further verification of structural integrity. This issue is therefore resolved.

Sincerely,

} c~~ _[-L obert A. Clark, Chief L-  %

FROM: Leon Engle, Project Manager i_

Operating Reactors Branch f3, DL TRIP REPORT: NORTH ANNA POWER STATION, UNIT NOS 1 AND 2 On February 19, 1981, a site visit to the North Anna Power Station was conducted by tne Atomic Safety and Licensing Appeal Board Panel (ASLAP) and the NRC staff. The purpose of the site visit was to provide an opportunity for the ASLAP to observe and ask questiods of the Virginia Electric and Power Company (the licensee) and the NRC staff regarding the replacement of the NA-1 Low Pressure (LP) turbine rotor No. 2 with the TMI-2 LP turbine rotor No. 2. A list of attendees is provided in the Attachment to this memorandum.

The site-visit was initiated at the NA Vistors Center where Mr. K. Conrad 0 of the Westinghouse Corporation (W) provided a briefing on the manufacture and assembly of W LP turbine discs on rotor shafts and the basis for use of disc keyways in the assembly of LP turbine rotors. The phenomena of recent observed cracks in disc keyways was also discussed.

The meeting was then adjourned to the NA-1 & 2 Turbine Building where the ASLAP could observe and ask questions regarding the NA-1 LP turbine rotor No. 2. The TMI-2 LP turbine rotor No. 2 had not yet arrived on site and was delayed in transit at Front Royal, Virginia. Also, a plant tour was made of :afety-grade plant systems and buildings with respect to the orientation of the NA-1 & 2 turbines.

The meeting was reconvened to allow the ASLAP to ask additional questions from the licensee and NRC ;taff for clarifying the Turbine Missile Issue and the staff's reevaluation of the time interval for reinspection of W turbines based on the new crack growth data'from the LP turbine at the Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, Unit 1.

Once the ASLAP had completed its site visit, the NRC project manager met with the licensee (Mr. R. Cartwright - Station Manager and Mr. D. Lippard) to discuss the items listed below:

1. A discussion and opdate was provided to the licensee regarding active ongoing actions as specified in the NRC Technica1 Assignment Control System Status Report for NA-1 & 2 for Fiscal Years 1980 and 1981.
