Nevelos, Radiation Protection Supervisor The inspector also interviewed other licensee employees including members of the health physics' staf * Denotes th'seo present-at the exit intervie j Introduction' j During this inspection the licensee's capability to adequately perform I radiological bioassay using a whole body counting system was reviewe An NRC whole body counting phantom containing radioactive sources traceable to the National Bureau of Standards was submitted to the licensee for analysis. The phantom duplicated the nuclides and the organ burdens that the licensee might encountir during. normal operation. The i phantom was analyze ~d using the licensee's normal methods and~ equipmen ' Comparison of Results The licensee operates two whole body country systems: a chair counting system and a moving bed system. The chair counting system consists of a 3"x 3" NaI(TI) detector for body counting and a 1.5"x 0.5" NaI(T1)

detector for thyroid counting, which are coupled to a multi channel analyzer, which is interfaced to a computer. The moving bed system consists of an 8"x 4" NaI(TI) detector coupled to a multi channel analyzer which is interfaced to a computer. The system software is supplied by a vendor. The NRC phantom was counted for 120 seconds in the chair counter and 356 seconds in the bed counting system. The lung results are based on an average of five measurements, and the GI tract results are based on an average of three measurements. Results of the ,

comparisons are listed in Table Based on these results, no violations were identified in this are ' Procedures and Data l The licensee's procedures HPDP 2.13, " Operation of Canberra Model 2260 Accuscan Bed and Model 2270 Chair Whole Body Counter", and HPDP 2.15,"

Calibration and Operation of Whole Body Counting Bed Accuscan for ABACOS II", were reviewed. Both procedures require periodic source and

background checks and a blind spike phantom check. Calibrations-are required semiannually. .The inspector reviewed selected QC' data.for'1986 land 1987 to'date. Based on this review the inspector discussed the

.

construction and use of. control charts with the licensee. .The inspector also provided.a copy of a publication to the licensee which discussed the-

~

use of c'ontrol charts. Currently the licensee relies on the whole body counting system comput'er to store the!QC data. The QC data are not plotted daily by~the' computer. Thus the QC data which is generated by the licensee cannot'be'used'to. note biases or. trends which'ocurr until well after:the'

fact when the: data is finally plotted. The inspector. stated that the use of control charts would be reviewed during a_ subsequent-inspectio .' ~ Exit Interview Thel inspector' met with the licensee representatives denoted in Paragraph

'I at the conclusion of the inspection on May 22, 1987.~ ;TheLinspector summarized the purpose and scope'of the inspection and the inspection finding . .
