r ARKANSAS POWER & LIGHT COMPANY POST Of flCE BOX 551 LITTLE ROCK. ARKANSAS 72203 (501)371-4000 July 29, 1982 OCAN078217 Mr. Darrell G. Eisenhut, Director Division of Licensing Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20555

SUBJECT:

Arkansas Nuclear One - Units 1 & 2 Docket No. 50-313 & 50-368 License No. DPR-51 & NPF-6 Results of Appendix R Compliance Review Gentlemen:

On July 1, 1982, we submitted by letter (0CAN078202) our complete response documenting the results of our review of the ANO fire zones for compliance to 10CFR50.48 and 10CFR50 Appendix R.

Within that report, we made commitments to provide specific clarifying information within 30 days of July 1, 1982. Our responses are as follows:

Item 1: Fire zones 99M, 100N (Unit 1) and 2100Z, 2101AA (Unit 2) each required a modification of the swing pump switchgear for the service water and charging pumps. This modification is described in detail in Section 3 of the subject report. In the report it was stated that we have been experiencing long lead times on procurement of switchgear equipment and expect this particular equipment to take 12-14 months for delivery.

However, we are presently checking with manufacturers to see what schedules are available. We will verify the results of our investigations to you within 30 days.

Response: Our purchasing department has been in contact with j manufacturers of this type electrical equipment and are being quoted 12-14 months for delivery after receipt of a purchase order. None of the manufacturers will commit to a shorter schedule without an order.

Accordingly, the earliest anticipated delivery schedule for this equipment would be December 1983 to February 1984 8208030312 820729 08v/.

  • - Mr. Darroll G. Eisenhut July 29, 1982 (allowing for a September NRC approval, 3 months design and purchase order preparation, and 12-14 months delivery).

As we stated in our Appendix R report, since an outage is required to perform this modification we request an extension until the fourth ANO-2 refueling outage which is scheduled to occur in Fall 1984 (Unit 2 is on a 12 month refueling cycle).

Item 2: The details of the request for specific exemptions for zone 2024JJ are described in Section 4 of the subject report. One exemption request refers to the watertight doors bounding that zone and states that procedures will be changed to require that door be treated as a fire door. Appendix 0 states this change will be made within 30 days.

Response: A Plant Engineering Action Request has been issued to add the subject door to the ANO Fire Door List. Also appropriate signs have been added to clearly indicate the door is a fire door.

This was completed on July 29, 1982.

Very truly yours, ohn R. Marshall Manager, Licensing JRM:TE: sc
