Subject:

Informative Notification -- 10 CFR 50.46 Thirty-Day Report on Significant PC" Change in ECCS Analyses Ladies and Gentlemen:

Framatome Technologies Incorporated (FTI) has recently completed two sets of small break loss of coolant accident (SBLOCA) analyses for the B&W-designed Arkansas Nuclear One Unit 1 (ANO-1) plant in accordance with the RELAP5-based evaluation model (EM) described in BAW-10192PA. This 177-fuel assembly lowered-loop plant had previously used the CRAFT 2 Evaluation Model described in BAW-10154PA to perform small break loss-of-coolant-accident (SBLOCA) analyses. The RELAP5/ MOD 2 B&W analysis sets were performed at power levels of 102 percent of 2568 and 2772 MWt, respectively, using increased steam generator tube plugging, reduced high pressure injection flows, adjusted emergency feedwater flows, reduced core flood tank (CFT) pressures, and reduced CFT liquid inventories.

Pursuant to 10 CFR 50.46 Section (a)(3) and NRC Information Notice 97-15, Supplement 1, FTI is notifying the NRC of a significant change (more than 50 F) in the calculated peak cladding temperature (PCT) within 30 days of discovery. The CRAFT 2 limiting PCT for ANO-1 was bounded by the 1859 F PCT calculated at 2568 MWt for Crystal River-3 cold leg pump discharge break size of 0.125 ft. The RELAP5/ MOD 2 2568 MWt power level case calculated a 2

2 PCT of 131l' F for the 0.15 f1 CLPD break. The significant PCT decrease of more than 50 F is related to the EM differences and plant parameter variations described. The input parameter changes increased the overall PCT.

The RELAP5-based EM contributed significant improvements to the PCT, such that the most-limiting PCT decreased for the worst SBLOCA break size and location.

Continued compliance to all 10 CFR 50.46 limits has been demonstrated at all times in life by the two sets of RELAP5 analyses covering the required SBLOCA spectrum of breaks for ANO-0 '
