NUCLEAR ONE, UNIT NO. 2 (TAC NO. MA1545) i

Dear Mr. Hutchinson:

By letter dated October 8,1997 (2CAN109703), as supplemented by letter dated February 25, 1999 (2CAN029905), Entergy Operations, Inc. (the licensee), requested an exemption from certain requirements of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR) Part 50, Appendix R, Section Ill.G.2," Fire Protection of Safe Shutdown Capability," for equipment i located below the 354-foot elevation of the Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit No. 2 (ANO-2), intake structure. In particular, the licensee requested an exemption from the technical requirements of 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix R, Section Ill.G.2.c, which require fire detectors and an automatic fire suppression system to be installed in the subject area.

4 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.12, has issued the enclosed exemption for ANO-2. A copy of the exemption is being forwarded to the Office of the Federal Register for publication.
