GPU, INC. ANNOUNCED INTENT TO EXPLORE OPTIONS RELATIVE TO FUTURE OPERATION OF OYSTER CREEK GENERATING STATION t

On April 10, 1997, GPU, Inc. announced that, in addition to the continued operation of Oyster Creek, it is also exploring the options of either salo or the early retirement of Oyster Creek to mitigate costs associated with the continued operation of the plant. GPU plans to propose the two options of the sale or early retirement of Oyster Creek as part of a restructuring. filing in July 1997 to the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. If the decision is made to retire the plant early, retirement ,

would likely take place in the year 2000.

GPU will begin work next week to develop plans to support the sale of the plant, decommissioning, personnel retention, and retraining. _ Reviews will be performed of current and future projects and regulatory commitments. GPU intends to maintain adequate staffing at Oyster Creek to run the plant-efficiently and safely.

The resident inspectors were informed of the above by licensee management this. morning.

The licens6e has issued a press release. The State of New Jersey has been informed.
