OffGas System Leak At 6:10 A.M. on February 10, 1987 the licensee declared an Unusual Event as a result of identifying the presence of radioactivity in the feedpump room. The activity was detected by an alarm on a continuous area monitor and by an individual alarming a portal monitor. The plant was operating at full power at the time.
The activity is believed to be escaping from a leak at an offgas sample pump or flow meter. This equipment is located in the feedpump room. Exhaust from this room is unmonitored and to the atmosphere at the heater bay roof. Efforts are underway to locate and repair the leak.
Sampling at ground level downwind of the release point shows activity to be approximately 1% of maximum permissible concentration. Licensee calculations indicate the site boundary dose rate to be 6.14 x 10 -4 mR/hr.
Three site workers received minor skin contamination and nine workers had some clothing contamination. The contamination was short half life material and decayed off within a short time.
The State of New Jersey has been informed.
The licensee has made a press release and expects to made a followup release. Media interest in expected. The Region I Public Affairs Office is prepared to handle media inquiries.
