SUBJECT:

DUAL TRAIN DECAY HEAT SYSTEM OUTAGE AT RANCHO SECO-On May 2, 1987, at'8:40 am, with the plant in cold shutdown for sixteen months, the 111censee began a planned seven day dual train decay heat system outage. Decay heat

will be removed using alternate methods that the licensee has demonstrated to have the capacity to maintain a cold shutdown condition.
Prestntly the reactor coolant system is filled and vented on a steam bubble with no forctd flow. Plant pressure is being maintained at 218 psig. Average incore thtrmocouple temperature is 120 F and cold leg temperatures are approximately 110'F.

. The steam generators are operable and available for decay _ heat removal. The licensee is using an operating procedure for the control of the alternate removal of decay heat.

-Ths rssident inspectors are monitoring the dual train outage.
