' Docket Nos. 50-348 i 50-364 c

U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATTN: Document Control Desk t Vashington, D. C. 20555 Gentlemen:

Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant - Units 1 and 2 +

Safety Parameter Display System (SPDS) -}

By letter dated: May 30, 1990, the NRC reported to Alabama Power Company ,

the results of their~ audit of the Farley Nuclear Plant SPDS held on 4 February 5 and 6, 1990. The NRC found that the SPDS met six of the eight requirements established in NUREG-0737, Supplement 1. The two

. requirements which were not met are: 1) to provide a continuous display of safety status information and 2):to provide minimum information concerning the status of radioactivity control. Alabama Pover Company  ;

has reviewed the May 30, 1990 report and commits to modify the SPDS as described below in order to address the two areas of concern. ,

Firstly, one of the SPDS consoles located in the-control room will'be I modified such that only the SPDS information can be displayed by its monitor. . This reconfiguration vill ensure that the SPDS safety status- -

information vill be continuously displayed in the main control room.

Secondly, a radioactivity control status bar vill be added.to the>SPDS toplevel summary. display which will alarm whenever a selected radiation monitor -input reaches its defined setpoint. . A second level SPDS' display-vill.be developed that'will list the radiation monitors and their readings. These changes vill satisfy the requirement to provide the. ,

operator with :the status of radioactivity control on the SPDS. 4 Alabama Power Company commits to complete the reconfiguration of the dedicated control room console and the addition of the radioactivity control status information to the SPDS by the end of the second refueling outage following NRC approval of the proposed resolutions.

-In addition, the NRC stated in the May 30,' 1990 letter that it is their '

understanding that all remaining safety significant human engineering discrepancies identified by the control room design,reviev.(CRDR) vill be

! resolved by the end of the next refueling outages for both units. i

,. . Alabama Power Company confirms this schedule for resolution of the-L

' remaining open issues identified in the CRDR Summary Report dated B December 29, 1986 and the concerns identified in Enclosure 1 Item III of '

the May 30, 1990 letter.

If there are any questions, please advise.
