Dear Mr. Grier:

SPOOL WELD BUILDUP INSUFFICIENT EXAMINATION

( 10CFR50.55(e), POTENTIAL SIGNIFICANT DEFICIENCY l NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS I HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION 1

1 On October 10, 1980, a verbal report was made to Region 1, Office of Inspection and Enforcement representative, Mr. J. Mattia, advising of a potential significant item.

Weld buildups on pipe spools were determined to be not sufficiently examined. Corrective measures committed to reexamine six pipes by conventional methods cannot be done due to inaccessibility. Two are embedded in concrete (JE-12 inch diesel fuel tank vent lines) and four buried and backfilled outside Unit Ifo. 1 (EA-36 inch service water lines).

The following supplemental information is submitted in accordance with the requirements of 10CFR50.55(e).

Bechtel Power Corporation, PSE&G's Architect Engineer, is currently reviewing this concern to determine a course of action which will be followed to show the acceptability of these six buildups.
