Dear Mr.Tedesco:

The referenced document contains an open item concerning the PVNGS equipment qualification programs.Equipment qualification is divided into seismic qualification, in accordance with IEEE Standard 344-1975 and environmental qualification, in accordance with NUREG-0588.

As stated in the referenced document, Section 3.10, the NRC staff requires that a significant portion, 85%, of the equipment important to safety must be qualified, documented in an auditable manner and installed onsite before an onsite NRC audit can be performed.

The NRC staff also requires a summary of seismic qualification information be submitted prior to the audit.We plan to submit this report to you by April 1, 1982.The reference document, Section 3.11, asked that we review the environmental qualification documentation for each item of safety-related electrical equipment which could be exposed to a harsh environment to determine the degree of compliance with NUREG-0588.

It is our understanding that the NRC,staff will require an audit of the environmental qualification program the same as for the seismic qualification pxogram, that is, require a significant portion, 85%, of the qualification completed, documentation in an auditable form, and installed onsite.Also, required is a summary of environmental qualification information for electrical equipment required for safety which may be subjected to a harsh environment.
