SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR WOLF CREEK GENERATING STATION (TAC NO, 99538)

Dear Mr. Maynard:

The staff has reviewed Wolf Creek Generating Station's (WCGS) September 2, 1997, request for technical specification amendment Jertaining to the auxiliary feedwater system and has determined that tle following additional information is needed to complete the review:

1, Define the physical beginning and end of the ESW " supply" or "flowpath" to the turbine-driven auxiliary feedwater (TDAFW) pump that would apply under the 7 day allow outage line (A0T).

2. In the background section "ESW Flow Path Required Action," of Attachment I, WCGS justifies the 7 day A0T, in part, because of the remaining operable motor-driven (MD) AFW pump. This statement refers to a singular 3DAFW pump, not to two pumps. If one ESW supply to the TDAFW pump is inoperable, is the associated MDAFW pump operable or ino>erable?

If the ESW supply to the MDAFW pump is inoperable, explain why t7e A0T should not be 72 hours8.333333e-4 days
0.02 hours
1.190476e-4 weeks
2.7396e-5 months
due to one inoperable AFW train.

3. In Section B 3.7.5.C.1 of Attachment V, WCGS 3roposes, in part, to change the TS Bases to state that gne inoperaale AFW train includes the loss of two ESW supply lines to the TDAFW pump. From this statement, one concludes that if the two ESW supply lines are lost to the TDAFW pump, both MDAFW pumps are unaffected and can provide the required amount of ESW to the steam generators. Is this conclusion correct? If not, please provide clarification, if so, how does WCGS ensure that the inoperable ESW supply to the TDAFW pump does not affect the ESW supply to the MDAFW pumps?
