Dear Mr. Maynard:

By letters dated April 16,1993, February 9,1994, July 15,1994, December 22,1994, February 15,1995, March 10,1995, March 29,1995, June 27,1995, June 20,1996, August 2, 1996, August 23,1996, and February 3,1997, Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation (WCNOC) submitted information pertaining to thermo-lag at the Wolf Creek Generating Station ,

(WCGS), which included responses to requests for additional info,mation pertaining to ampacity i derating issues. i The NRC staff, with assistance from its contractor, Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), has completed its review of your submittals. The results of the review are documented in the enclosed safety evaluation and the SNL Technical Letter Report, "A Technical Evaluation of the Wolf Creek Nuclear Operating Corporation Analysis of Fire Barrier Ampacity Derating Factors," dated December 20,1996. ,

l On the basis of its review, the staff has concluded that the ampacity derating analysis results are acceptable and there are no significant safety hazards associated with the application of l WCNOC's ampacity derating methodology at WCGS. You should retain all documentation i related to the resolution of the ampacity issue for future NRC audits or inspections.
