On behalf of the City of Hesperia, attached for your consideration are copies of letters we sent to Federal legislators regarding our position on the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Unit 2 project.Should you require any additional information, please feel free to contact me. ==Dear Senator Boxer:==
On behalf of the City of Hesperia and its 91,000 residents, I would like to express our support for a fair and inclusive regulatory process currently underway for the proposed restart and operation of the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station (SONGS) Unit 2.As a local elected official, I strongly believe that maintaining a public and transparent regulatory process is vital for the quick restart of SONGS. Southern California Edison should be allowed to restart and operate SONGS as proposed in their Return-to-Service Action Plan if the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) determines they have sufficiently completed the compensatory and corrective actions requested in the March 27, 2012 Confirmatory Action Letter.California businesses and residents are facing a tough economy and with thousands of jobs and public services that depend on a reliable power system, SONGS serves a critical function of providing voltage support throughout the year. Developing alternative sources of energy to offset the loss of power generated at SONGS may be necessary, and I am concerned that no energy source will be integrated quickly enough to provide for the immediate reliability that our businesses and residents need during peak conditions.
For these reasons, we encourage the NRC to continue moving forward with the existing process and we look forward to a favorable restart of SONGS. Should you have any questions regarding our position in this matter, please do not hesitate to contact City Manager Mike Podegracz at (760) 947-1018.Sincerely,'L .-, BiLH llant Mayor Bill Holland, MaVor 9700 Seventh Ave.Thurston Smfth, Mayor Pro Tern Hesperia, CA 92345 Russ Blewet:.
