DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 1URBINE DRIVEN AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMP BEARING TEMPERATURE SDAR: CP-87-50 (INTERIM REPORT)

Gentlemen:

On July 27, 1987, we verbally notified your Mr. H. S. Phillips of a deficiency involving abnormal thrust bearing temperatures on the Turbine Driven Auxiliary Feedwater Pump. This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). Our last report on this issue was logged TXX-6680 dated August 24, 1987.

During sta tup testing of the Unit I turbine driven auxiliary feedwater pump (CPI-AFAPTD-01), an abnormally high temperature was identifiad for the thrust bearing. The pump manufacturer (Ingersoll-Rand), contacter. to assist in determining the cause of the condition, indicated the terr, eratures were not uncommon to the specific pump model (HMTA) and appcar tc oe the result of improper installation and centering of the rotating ele.rient. Further, the vendor has indicated a technical bulletin is being prepared to provide more specific installation instructions in the pump manual that would eliminate misinterpretations of the installation requirements or design criteria.

We are continuing our evaluation of this issue and anticipate submitting our next report by November 6, 1987.

Very t ; y yours, Q,) /
