l This letter acknowledges receipt of the NRC's request for additional information (RAI) letter dated May 12,1997 regarding Thermo-Lag-Related Ampacity Derating at River Bend Station (RBS). The information that follows provides clarification on the current status of the subject calculations and the expected date for providing a detailed response to your request.

RBS calculations G13.18.14.0-178, "Ampacity Derating Factors for Thermo-Lag 330-1,"

and E-218, "Ampacity Verification of Cables within Raceways Wrapped with Appendix R Fire Protection Barrier," were provided to your office as attachments to a [[letter::RBG-43571, Provides Responses to 961016 RAI Re Ampacity Derating Including Supporting Draft Calculations G13.18.14.0-178,Rev 0, Ampacity Derating Factors for Thermo-Lag 330-1 & E-128, Rev 1, Ampacity Verification....Fire Protection Barrier|letter dated December 19,1996]]. At the time of that submittal, the draft calculations were being finalized by an engineering contractor and were being reviewed for acceptance by the RBS engineering staff. The draft calculations were provided to support the RBS response and resolution of the associated questioes.

Since the previous submittal, the RBS engineering staff has completed a review of both calculations which identified several issues, some of which were similar to the comments discussed in your RAI. Resolution of the remaining comments is ongoing. After approval of the calculations, RBS will provide the detailed response to the subject RAI along with

final versions of the calculations. Based on current resource estimates, the detailed l l response and calculations are expected to be submitted by August 28,1997. However, l other options are being considered to expedite completion of the RAI response.

l RBS previously committed to complete resolution of Thermo-Lag issues by the end of j Refueling Outage 7, currently scheduled to be completed October 1997. To meet this

l. commitment, it is imperative that the issues associated with the subject calculations be resolved. To assist in your review of our resolution of your comments, we would like to offer a working level meeting at your office to review the issues and address any further )

l questions. This meeting may be beneficial in ccmpleting your final reviews subsequent to l our submittal.
