Victor Dricks, 817-200-1128 NRC Proposes $14,500 Fine to Providence Alaska Medical Center The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is proposing a $14,500 fine to the Providence Alaska Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska, for four violations identified during a special inspection. The violations were identified in a Nov. 2, 2018, inspection report.

Two of the violations - failure to monitor occupational exposure of workers to account for external employment for purposes of occupational dose and failure to implement a radiation protection program commensurate with the scope and extent of licensed activities - were considered significant violations. The letter to the medical center noted these violations represent a failure of Providence Alaska Medical Center management to provide adequate oversight for the radiation safety program, specifically the area of occupational radiation monitoring and dose assessment.

The medical center was also cited for failing to provide adequate instructions to workers associated with exposure to radiation and not providing an annual report to workers regarding personnel exposure information.

NRC staff met with medical center officials on Dec. 17, 2018, during a pre-decisional enforcement conference to discuss the proposed violations. The medical center has 30 days to dispute the fine or request involvement of a neutral third-party mediator to resolve the issues.
