No: IV-23-004 April 13, 2023 CONTACT: Victor Dricks, 817-200-1128 NRC Schedules Public Meeting to Discuss Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant Performance and the License Renewal Process Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the license renewal process and 2022 safety performance of the Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant during a public meeting May 3. The plant, operated by Pacific Gas & Electric Co., is located near San Luis Obispo, California.
The meeting will run from 6-9 p.m. Pacific time, at the San Luis Obispo County Government Building, Board Chambers, 1055 Monterrey St., in San Luis Obispo. NRC staff involved in the license renewal process and responsible for plant inspections will be available to answer questions and receive comments.
The NRC concluded that Diablo Canyon Units 1 and 2 operated safely during 2022 and all inspection findings and performance indicators had very low safety significance. As a result, the plant remains under the NRCs normal level of oversight, which entails thousands of hours of inspection each year.

Later this year, PG&E is expected to apply to extend the operating licenses of both units, currently scheduled to shut down in 2024 and 2025, for an additional 20 years. During the meeting, NRC staff will provide an overview of the license renewal process, including the safety and environmental reviews that will be performed.
The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.
The annual assessment letter for both units and the public meeting notice are available on the NRC website. Slides prepared by NRC staff for the meeting will also be made available when finalized. Current performance information for the plants is updated quarterly.
