No: IV-23-003 April 11, 2023 CONTACT: Victor Dricks, 817-200-1128 NRC to Conduct Open House to Discuss 2022 Performance of Columbia Generating Station

Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2022 safety performance of the Columbia Generating Station during an in-person open house scheduled for April 27. The plant is in Richland, Washington, and is operated by Energy Northwest.

The open house will be held from 3 -4 p.m., Pacific time, at the Richland Public Library, Conference Room A, 955 Northgate Drive in Richland. NRC resident inspectors based full-time at the plant and other staff responsible for plant inspection and oversight will be available to answer questions about the safety performance of the plant and the NRC's role in ensuring its safe operation.

The NRC determined that Columbia Generating Station operated safely during 2022. All inspection findings and performance indicators were green or very low safety significance. As a result, the plant remains under the NRCs normal level of oversight. This oversight entails approximately 3,000 hours0 days
0 hours
0 weeks
0 months
of inspection each year.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.

Plant inspections are performed by two NRC resident inspectors and inspection specialists from the agencys Region IV office in Arlington, Texas.

The annual assessment letter and meeting notice for the plant are available on the NRC website. Current performance information is available and is updated quarterly.
