Victor Dricks, 817-200-1128 NRC to Hold Virtual Meeting to Discuss 2020 Performance of Callaway Nuclear Power Plant Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will discuss the 2020 safety performance of the Callaway nuclear power plant during a virtual meeting to be held July 28.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. Central time. Online registration is required to participate.

Following registration, a confirmation email will be sent with details regarding how to join the video webinar. To listen to the audio presentation, those interested must call 888-769-9038 and enter passcode 8513898#. The meeting will be recorded and later available on the NRC website.

NRC staff responsible for plant inspection and oversight will participate in the discussion, including the resident inspectors based full-time at the plant. NRC staff will make a brief presentation regarding Callaways performance and the agencys oversight process, followed by a question and answer period. Officials from Ameren, which operates the plant, will discuss their performance improvement plan.

Callaway, located in Fulton, Missouri, operated safely during 2020. The NRC determined that the performance at Callaway during the most recent quarter was within the Regulatory Response Column, the second highest performance column of the NRCs Reactor Oversight Process Action Matrix. Because of the number of unplanned plant shutdowns, the plant will receive increased oversight and inspection focus during 2021. The plant has been shut down for maintenance since Dec. 24, 2020.

The NRC Reactor Oversight Process uses color-coded inspection findings and indicators to measure plant performance. The colors start at green and increase to white, yellow or red, commensurate with the safety significance of the issues involved. Inspection findings or performance indicators with more than very low safety significance trigger increased NRC oversight.

Inspections are performed by at least two NRC resident inspectors assigned to each plant and specialist inspectors from the Region IV office in Arlington, Texas.

The annual assessment letter for Callaway, as well as the meeting notice, are available on the NRC website. Current performance information for the plant is also available and is updated on a quarterly basis.
