Victor Dricks, 817-200-1128 NRC Schedules Regulatory Conference with Qal-Tek Associates The Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will meet with officials from Qal-Tek Associates of Idaho Falls, Idaho, Nov. 9 to discuss preliminary inspection findings regarding the shipment of radioactive materials.
The 8 a.m. meeting at the NRC Region IV office at 1600 E. Lamar Blvd., Arlington, Texas, is open to the public. NRC officials will answer questions following the business portion of the meeting.
A telephone bridge will be available for the meeting by calling 888-566-6140, passcode 8034597.
The apparent violations being considered for escalated enforcement are identified in an NRC inspection report prepared following an incident that occurred in April 2017, when a package containing several radioactive sources was shipped from a temporary jobsite to the companys headquarters. Upon receipt, workers scanned the package and found radiation levels in excess of regulatory limits because the radioactive sources had not been properly packaged.
A commercial shipping service was used, but based on interviews of licensee and shipper employees, no member of the public is expected to have received a radiation exposure in excess of regulatory limits.
No decision on the safety significance of the finding or any additional NRC actions will be made at the conference. That decision will be announced at a later time.
