C. 20555 Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket Nos. 50-440; 50-441 Seismic Quarterly Report Number 10 1

Gentlemen:

1 Enclosed for your inf ormation is the Tenth Quarterly Seismic Monitoring Report for the CEI opertted Micro-net, which is monitoring an area in the vicinity of two waste injection wells located about 3 miles south of the PNPP site. This report provides data and event analysis for the time period between January 1, 1989 and March 31, 1989. Also enclosed is information related to the intensity study of the 12/28/88 Me 2.8 event.

Monitoring Results During this quarter, four small events (two Mc=-0.2, -0.1, and 1.9) were detected in the corridor between the 1/31/86 epicenter and the Perry Nuclear Power Plant (PNPP). The event of March 22 with a magnitude Mc=1.9 and a depth of 2.1 Km is the largest microcarthquake to occur in the corridor, excluding aftershocks in the January 31, 1986 epicentral area, since seismic monitoring began. Any direct association of the operation of the wells with the recorded microseismicity is not yet apparent, although CEI continues to study the theory of induced seismicity.

Four other micro events (Mc = 0.6, -0.2, 0.1, and 0.3) just outside the network aperture were also recorded. Three of these events, the Mc = 0.6, 1 -0.2 and 0.1 occurred in the same vicinity. The other event on 3/25/89 l Mc = 0.3 was located in Fairport Harbor area near previously recorded events.

Intensity Survey of the December 28, 1988 Leroy Microcarthquake included in the report as Appendix B, is a summary of an intensity survey of the December 28, 1988 (Mc = 2.8) Leroy Microcarthquake. This event occurred within the aftershock zone of the 1/31/86 Leroy event. The intensity survey identified the total felt area, showing an anomalous elongated lobe extending in the northeasterly direction possibly related to rock anisotropy.

. Document Control Desk ,-2., . June 9, 1989 PY-CE1/NRR-1013 L Additior. of a Sixth Seismic Monitoring Station The addition of a sixth seismic station is currently being pursued. The addition of this station would exist as a temporary setup with a single vertical component seismometer. The addition of this station will be located approximately 13 miles northeast f rom the plant near Geneva State Park. This station will enable better hypocentral locations of events should they occur in the Madison area. It is anticipated that this station will be operational by mid-June.

This report will continue to be submitted on a quarterly basis and your staff kept appraised of local seismicity.
