Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D.C. 20555 Perry Nuclear Power Plant Docket Nos. 50-440; 50-441 Emergency Containment Venting

Dear Dr. Butler:

The purpose of this letter is to provide additional information regarding the Perry Plant Emergency Instructions (PEIs) for emergency containment venting. This informa-tion supplements our submittal of July 29, 1986 (PY-CEI/NRR-0507 L).

The Perry PEI for Drywell and Containment Pressure Control will be revised to direct the operator to align, except for the last valve, the Fuel Pool Cooling and Cleanup system vent path when containment pressure exceeds 15 psig. Consistent with the generic EPGs, the Perry PEI directs the operator to vent the containment if he is unable to maintain containment pressure below the containment pressure limit. In addition, the instruction will provide cautions to the operator regarding the time required to align the remaining two vent paths should they be required.

As you are aware, a proposed Revision 4 to the generic EPGs will be submitted by the BWR Owners Group (BWROG) in the future. Perry is continuing to participate in the generic BWROG EPG offort and we will incorporate applicable changes resulting from this revision to the EPGs when it is approved by the NRC.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to call me.

Very truly urs,

  1. 4 Murray R. Edelman Senior Vice President Nuclear Group MRE:jed cc: Jay Silberg, Esq. 9 John Stefano (2) l K.A. Connaughton phg I
