FACILITY: Louisiana Power & Light Company Licensee Emergency Classification:

Waterford 3 Notification of Unusual Event Taft, Louisiana Alert Docket No.: 50-382 Site Area Emergency General Emergency X Not Applicable

SUBJECT:

HIGH VIBRATION IN MAIN TURBINE (F0LLOWUP REPORT)

On July 18, 1985, Louisiana Power & Light (LP&L) Waterford 3 facility was shut down from approximately 25% power when high vibrations occurred in their main turbine generator.

An investigation into the cause of the vibrations has revealed damage to the permanent magnet generator used for exciter field voltage and minor damage to 13 blades on a low pressure section of the turbine. No damage observed thus far is believed to be the cause of the excessive vibration that occurred.

LP&L plans to replace the damaged blades.

LP&L plans to conduct additional inspections of the electrical generator with miniature cameras and fiber optics. The damaged turbine rotor assembly is being replaced by a spare and will be balance-checked to verify that it was not the cause of the vibration. In addition, several other possible sources of the vibrations are being studied.

The plant shutdown is expected to continue until approximately August 9, 1985.

The licensee does not plan to issue a press release but will respond to any media inquiries.

The state of Louisiana has been informed.
