Dear Mr. Hultsch:
This is in regard to your February 9, 1993, request for approval of a route for transporting irradiated reactor fuel from the University of Missouri Research Reactor to the Savannah River Plant,-Alken, South Carolina.
The enclosed route, as approved on February 21, 1992, and as supplemented on March 31, 1992, is valid for use through February 21, 1994.
The route approval identified three urbanized areas requiring armed escort:
St. Louis, Missouri; and Nashville and Knoxville, Tennessee. Please be advised that armed escorts are also required in these urbanized areas:
Ashville, North Carolina;-and Greenville and Spartanburg, South Carolina.
We have enclosed replacement route map pages indicating the latter escort require-monts.
Please substitute these pages for the corresponding pages in your route approval.
Please note that the notification requirements of 10 CFR 73.'37(f) and 73.72 apply for each shipment.
When making notification-to this office, please confirm that armed escort will be provided as required and the governor or his designee will or has been notified.
We understand that you are considering applying to the U.S. Depart-ment of Transportation for an exemption to use an alternate route,-
but that you do not intend to use this alternate route in 1993.
Accordingly, no f urther action will be taken on the alternate route -
proposed in your letter of-January 14, 1993.
