NARRATIVE

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No. 50-301 Unit Name Point Beach Unit 2 ;

Date August 6, 1982 ;

Completed By C. W. Fay Telephone 414/277-2811 Unit 2 operated at an average of 480 MWe net from July 1, 1982 to the end of the reporting period with no significant load reductions. The net loss of 6 MWe net, approximately 1%,

was attributed to the warmer inlet water temperature of Lake Michigan. i The primary-to-secondary leakage in the init 2 steam generator remains less than 10 gallons.per day. l t

During an engineering evaluation of a Unit 2 wiring change, it was discovered that two of the three level instruments on the "C" boric acid storage tank were powered from a common instru-ment bus. Normally, this has no detrimental effects on plant operations. However, a break in the steam line and a coincidental loss of AC power would delay the opening of the boric acid storage tank valves to the high head safety injection system. The level indications would recover when voltage returns via the emergency [

diesel.

t Upon discovery and verification, preventative action was t taken by switching the Unit 2 safety injection pump suction to the "B" boric acid sto) age tank. Final action correcting the wiring will be performed after approval of a special mainte-nance procedure.

This event is reportable in accordance with Technical Speci-fication 15.6.9.2.A.2. The NRC regional office was notified >

on July 28, 1982 as was the Resident Inspector. Licensee Event i Report No. 82-005/01T-0 will be filed to describe the event.

Also on July 28, 1982, while completing seismic support work per IE Bulletin 79-14, contractor personnel created a pinhole leak while welding on the letdown divert line to the holdup tanks of the chemical volume and control system of Unit 2. The leak was isolated within 8 minutes by Operations. The line L was returned to service after repairs and inservice testing i approximately 9 hours1.041667e-4 days
0.0025 hours
1.488095e-5 weeks
3.4245e-6 months
later. This event was not red phone reportable, however, a 30-day Licensee Event Report will be filed with the NRC. ,

No safety-related maintenance was performed during this period.

SUMMARY

OF OPERATING EXPERIENCE Docket No.- 50-266

, Unit Name Point Beach Unit 1

< Date August 6, 1982 Completed By C. W. Fay Telephone 414/277-2811 ;

Unit 1 operated at an average of 367 MWe net from July 1,

. 1982 to the end of the reporting period with no significant ;

I load reductions. !

Following maintenance'on the "B" cryogenic gas compressor s l at approximately 2000 hours0.0231 days
0.556 hours
0.00331 weeks
7.61e-4 months
on July 6, 1982, there was a radio- f active gaseous leak in the cryogenic system. The leak.was isolated '

immediately by Operations, after a 2h minute unscheduled release of radiation. Another 60 minutes was spent purging the system.

l This release was approximately .377% of the 15-minute Technical !

Specification limit and .173% of the hourly Technical Specifi- ;

cation limit. Although the release did not constitute a reportable l t event per the Licensee Event Report format, the event was reported j via the ENS to the NRC.

On July 15, 1982, at 1506 hours0.0174 days
0.418 hours
0.00249 weeks
5.73033e-4 months
, there was a blown fuse -

discovered to the breaker for the "B" train redundant containment i spray discharge valve (IMOV-860D) which left the valve inoperable. i The remaining containment spray discharge valve of the "B" train was tested to verify its operability. The fuse was replaced, the valve was tested per IT-50 and returned to service at 1532 hours0.0177 days
0.426 hours
0.00253 weeks
5.82926e-4 months
.

This is a reportable event per Technical Specification 15.6.9.2.B.2 and Licensee Event Report No. 82-103/03L-0 is being submitted to cover the event. ,

I During a review of maintenance activity, it was discovered

~

_ that the containment air particulate monitor and the containment ;

gas monitor were simultaneously out-of-service on July 15, 1982. ;

This is a reportable occurrence in accordance with Technical t

, Specification 15.6.9.2.B.2 and a 30-day Licensee Event Report -

L is currently being drafted to be filed with the NRC. {

Safety-related maintenance completed this month included i the replacement of seals in the Unit 1 "C" charging pump.
