LER NO. 81-80/3X, Rev. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-317 LICENSE NO. DPR 53 EVENT DATE 11-16-81 REPORT DATE ATTACHMENT CAUSE DESCRIPTION AND CORRECTTVE ACTIONS (CONT'D)

At 1220, during normal operation, the plant operator discovered a weep which appeared to be coming from a cracked weld at No. 12 Spent Fuel Cooling Pump discharge vent line's connection with the discharge header. The pump was immediately removed from service and the leak isolated. Inspection of the piping revealed a small linear indication on the discharge header, approx-imately 1" away from the' discharge vent line connection. The indication was removed and the line weld repaired. The site passed both radiographical examination and hydrostatic testing.

The cause of the indication was determined to be inadequate support of the vent line. During normal operation the discharge header experiences inherent vibration. This vibration was transmitted to the unsupported vent line causing movement relative to the discharge header. This resulted in the linear indication on the. discharge header. To prevent the recurrence of this in the future, a support assembly has been installed on the vent line.

This will eliminate vent line movement relative to the discharge header.
