P. O'Reilly, Director

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

SUBJECT:

Grand Gulf Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 Docket Nos. 50-416/417 File 0260/15525/15526 PRD-80/22, Status Report, Incorrect Pipe Supplied by Texas Pipe Bending AECM-80/108 On April 24, 1980, Mississippi Power & Light Company notified Mr. M. Hunt of your of fice of a Potentially Reportable Deficiency (PRD) at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station (GG5S) construction site. The deficiency concerns the apparent failure of Texas Pipe Bending to supply pipe in accordance with design requirements. Pipe supplied for Spool QLG41G015-06 was Schedule 40. The design drawings for the system in question, Fuel Pool Cooling and Cleanup, require the use of Schedule 10 pipe.

It has been determined that the heavier wall of this spool would not cause an overstressed condition on the pipe support system in this particular application. It would, therefore, not affect the safety of the plant. 'doweve r ,

the generic implications of the use of heavier wall pipe bends in other applications is currently under investigation. The investigation is to determine where heavier wall pipe spools are used and to evaluate that i application for its effect on associated pipe support systems.
