SUMMARY

OF TELEPHONE CONFERENCE CALL HELD ON SEPTEMBER 27,2010, BETWEEN THE U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION AND PSEG NUCLEAR, LLC, CONCERNING QUESTIONS PERTAINING TO THE SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2, LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of PSEG Nuclear, LLC, and Exelon held a telephone conference call on September 9, 2010, to discuss and clarify the staff's questions concerning the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Units 1 and 2, license renewal application. The telephone 90nference call was useful in clarifying the intent of the staff's questions. provides a listing of the participants and Enclosure 2 contains a brief summary of the discussion and status of the items.

The applicant had an opportunity to comment on this summary.

SUMMARY

OF MEETING ON QUESTIONS ON THE SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 LICENSE RENEWAL APPLICATION SEPTEMBER 27,2010 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of PSEG Nuclear, LLC (the applicant) held a telephone conference call on September 27, 2010, to discuss and clarify the applicant responses to NRC's request for additional information (RAI) related to the applicant's Inaccessible Medium Voltage Cables Not Subject to 10 CFR 50.49 Environmental Qualifications Program.

Discussion

1. NRC staff question: Will the response to RAI B.2.1.37 have to be supplemented along with the LRA supplement to include the additional in-scope cables?

Response: There will be no change in the Salem Inaccessible Medium Voltage Cables Not Subject to 10 CFR 50.49 Environmental Qualification Requirements aging management program scope, as-the SBO recovery and service water pump motor cables are already included within the scope of the E3 program_

2. NRC staff question: In its August 8,2010, response, the applicant stated that the service water vaults are inspected for water accumUlation weekly and the station blackout (SBO) cable vaults/manholes are inspected every 18 months. Both sets of vaults (service water and SBO) were found with submerged cables. The applicant does not explain why the SBO vaults/manholes are inspected at a longer interval (every 18 months) in the RAI response.

Response: The applicant stated that, prior to the period of extended operation, additional SBO recovery cable manhole and cable pit inspections will be performed and the frequency of inspections for accumulated water will be adjusted based on inspection results to ensure that the in-scope SBO recovery cables are not exposed to significant moisture.
