SUMMARY

OF MEETING ON DRAFT REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RESPONSES FOR SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 JANUARY 25,2011 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of PSEG Nuclear, LLC, held a telephone conference call on December 8, 2010, to update the NRC staff on recent Salem Unit 2 buried pipes inspections and their findings.

During the conference call, the NRC staff explained that the staff was still in discussions on their review of the Salem proposed Buried Piping Programs and would be preparing the final Safety Evaluation Report (SER) before the planned inspections of piping during the Unit 2 outage in April 2011. The NRC would like to know of inspections that may have been completed at Unit 2 that gave indications that the piping was coated. If so, the staff would be comfortable in moving forward with the SER and the meeting of the Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards in May 2011.

The applicant stated that as part of the extend of condition review, a portion of the Unit 2 auxiliary feedwater (AFW), station air and control air systems buried piping was excavated and the coatings were found to be in good condition. As indicted in the attachment in Enclosure 3, two AFW and five compressed air system lines in the scope of license renewal have been inspected since 2009: the inspections found that the coating was in good condition. As shown on the second page of the attachment, the two AFW pipes in Unit 2 that were exposed in 2010 for 3 feet each were in the Fuel Transfer Tub Area; a similar area in Unit 1 pipes were found to be missing coatings. Other piping not in the scope of license renewal at Unit 2 or pipes in common with Unit 2 as shown in the table in Enclosure 3 have been inspected and found that the coating was in good condition. The soil in these digs has also been found to be in good condition.
