SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 1, DRAFT REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (TAC NO. ME4923)

The attached draft request for information (RAI) was transmitted on December 28, 2010, to Mr. Jeff Keenan of PSEG Nuclear LLC (the licensee). This information was transmitted to facilitate an upcoming conference call in order to clarify the licensee=s October 21, 2010, letter which submitted the results of the steam generator tube inspections performed at Salem Nuclear Generating Station (Salem), Unit No. 1, during refueling outage 1R20.

This memorandum and the attachment do not convey or represent an NRC staff position regarding the licensees submittal.

DRAFT REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION REGARDING STEAM GENERATOR TUBE INSPECTION REPORT FOR REFUELING OUTAGE 1R20 SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 1 DOCKET NO. 50-272 By letter dated October 21, 2010 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML102980089), PSEG Nuclear LLC (the licensee) submitted the results of the steam generator (SG) tube inspections performed at Salem Nuclear Generating Station (Salem), Unit No. 1, during refueling outage 1R20 (spring 2010). This report was submitted in accordance with the requirements in Salem Unit 1 Technical Specification (TS) 6.9.1.10.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff has reviewed the information provided by the licensee and would like to discuss the following issues to clarify the submittal.

1. Please clarify the number of tubes with overexpansions (designated as OXP) and with hydraulic underexpansions (ETL). Please provide the maximum distance that any of the bottom of the tube expansion transition locations are from the top of the tubesheet.
2. Please confirm that no degradation was observed during examination of previously installed tube plugs.
3. Please discuss the extent to which any new dents/dings were observed during 1R20.
4. In addition to the tube in Row 54, Column 35 in steam generator 13, which other tubes were preventively plugged for wear at the anti-vibration bars in that steam generator?
