SUMMARY
OF MEETING ON DRAFT REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION RESPONSES FOR SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 DECEMBER 8, 2010 The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC or the staff) and representatives of PSEG Nuclear, LLC held a telephone conference call on December 8, 2010, to discuss and clarify the applicant responses to NRC's request for additional information (RAI) B.2.1.33-07 concerning the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 1 and Unit 2, license renewal application spent fuel pool leakage.
During the conference call, the PSEG described the spent fuel pool sketches in Enclosure 3 and discussed their proposed plan to ensure that inaccessible concrete degradation will be identified and addressed before loss of intended function. PSEG discussed their intent to perform additional examinations and testing in the vicinity of the construction joints of the spent fuel pool walls (east and west). Specifically, PSEG stated that prior to the period of extended operation a shallow core sample approximately four inches deep in the east wall in the vicinity of the construction joint will be taken for examination to confirm that the concrete is in good condition.
The applicant explained that an excavation of the east wall area is scheduled to be done prior to the period of extended operation for buried piping and their plan is to obtain the core samples during this excavation.
In conclusion, the NRC found the applicant's plans for core samples acceptable and it was agreed that the applicant would send the draft RAI response as a formal RAI response.
