October 21, 2014 MEMORANDUM TO: Edwin M. Hackett, Executive Director Advisory Committee of Reactor Safeguards FROM: Richard P. Correia, Director /RA/

Division of Risk Analysis Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research

SUBJECT:

TRANSMITTAL OF NUREG-XXXX, DEVELOPMENT OF A STATISTICAL TESTING APPROACH FOR QUANTIFYING SOFTWARE RELIABILITY AND ITS APPLICATION TO AN EXAMPLE SYSTEM I am forwarding the enclosed draft NUREG-XXXX, Development of a Statistical Testing Approach for Quantifying Software Reliability and Its Application to an Example System.

This draft is intended to support the November 18, 2014, Sub-Committee meeting, at which time the staff will brief the Sub-Committee on this report. The report summarizes an experimental study on estimating software failure probability of a digital instrumentation and control system, using the statistical testing method. The objective of the study is to obtain insights into the feasibility, practicality, and usefulness of this software reliability quantification method, which would enable addressing digital I&C failures in NPP PRAs.

This experiment demonstrates the feasibility of a combined PRA and thermal hydraulic simulation-based method to generate software test cases and the application of the testing results to a reactor PRA. The RES/DRA staff is looking forward to discussing this report with sub-committee.
