IE Bulletin (IEB)

(0 pen) IEB 79-13, Cracking in Feedwater System Piping, Unit 1.

As followup to IEB 79-13, the inspector performed the following inspections:

a.

Radiographic (RT) Film Review 1864 152 RT inspection of the feedwater nozzle to pipe weld areas after hot functional testing, as required by paragraph 1 of the Bulletin, has been completed. The RT was evaluated to the 1977 edition of article NC-5000 of Section III of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code to

'

the 2T penetrameter sensitivity level. The inspector reviewed film

for the welds listed below which covers all of the feedwater and aux-iliary feedwater nozzle to piping welds and adjacent base material.

The inapector also reviewed the licensee's disposition of two indica-tions found during the RT.

The following summarizes the indications and the disposition:

(1) The film for weld CAIF-575 exhibited a linear indication 1-inch away from the weld on the nozzle side (NCI 9743). The inside of the nozzle in the area of the indication is clad and the clad was not ground smooth. Visual inspection of the inside of the surface revealed surface irregularities the exact shape and length of the indication. Ultrasonic (UT) examination of tne area in question revealed no indications in the nozzle base material.

Based on visual and UT inspections, the indication was accepted.

(2) The film for weld CFIF-714 exhibited an intermittent linear indi-cation 2 inches away from the weld on the nozzle side (NCI 9744).

Parallax RT shots prove the indication to be in the non pressure boundary fillet weld joining the flow limiter to the flow limiter sleeve and not in the nozzle base material. The indication is typical of what could be expected at the root of a fillet weld of this type. Therefore, with Westinghouse concurrence, the indica-tion was accepted.

b.

Inspection of Supports and Snubbers As requested in the licensee response dated October 19, 1979, feedwater snubbers and supports are being inspected as a part of the inspection detailed in SG.55(e) item 369-370/79-02. The inspection program is outlined in NCI 8685. The inspector discussed the program details and status of the prcgram with responsible licensee personnel. The inspec-tion of the feedwater system is expected to be completed by December 15, 1979.

Within the areas inspected, no items cf noncompliance or devations were identified.
