Nuclear Regulatory Commission Suite'2900 101 Marietta Street, NW Atlanta, GA- 30323 BRUNSWICK STEAM ELECTRIC PLANT UNIT 1 DOCKET NO. 50-325 LICENSE NO. DPR-62 SPECIAL REPORT PER TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION 3.7.7.1 AND PURSUANT TO TECHNICAL SPECIFICATION 6.9.2 (1-SR-84-2)

Dear Mr. O'Reilly:

On May-21, 1984, while performing the weekly operability test of the Fire Suppression Water System, PT-35.1, the diesel. driven fire pump was rendered inoperable due to'a decrease in the diesel closed cooling water expansion tank level. ;This was caused by leaking tubes in the heat exchanger tube bundle. A new heat exchanger tube bundle had to be ordered, thereby, causing the seven-day time frame of the involved LCO on the diesel driven fire pump to be exceeded. The new heat exchanger. tube bundle was placed into the heat exchanger. After a test run of the diesel indicated that the water level was stable, the diesel driven fire pump was returned to service on June 2, 1984.

Brunswick has a contingency plan for loss of redundancy in the Fire

Suppression System which includes a daily channel check of the fire

- suppression tank, verification of operability of the alternate pump, and an agreement with the City of Southport to provide backup fire suppression equipment.

Very truly yours, C. R. Dietz, General Manager Brunswick Steam Electric Plant MTA/ddr/LETDD1 cc: Mr. R. C. DeYoung NRC Document Control Desk 8
