Washington, DC 20555-l o Millstone Nuclear Power Station, Unit No. 3 Commitment Revision- LER 97-021-00 Exoansion Joint Tie Rod Assemblies The purpose of this letter is to revise the commitments that were previously submitted to the NRC in LER 97-021-00, " Defective Desian of RSS Expansion Joint Tie Rod Assembiv. These commitmentsincluded; 1) The required physical modifications to the eight expansion joints within the RSS will be completed prior to August 13,1997 and no later than prior to entry into mode 4; and the expansion joints provided by Temp Flex division of Johnson Controls will be'identifed and reviewed to verify that they meet design requirements prior to August 13,1997 and -

no later than prior to entry into mode 4,

. At this time, all tied expansion joints at Millstone Unit 3 have been identified.

Modeling and' qualification of these joints is currently being evaluated by a qualified vendor to determine the design adequacy. Physical modifications where needed to

. correct any deficiencies identified will be completed prior to entry into mode 4.

- The revised commitments are provided in Attachment 1.- The remaining commitments in our letter of March 19,1997 are unchanged.
