' ALTERNATE REQUALIFICATION PROGRAM FOR DETAILED SENIOR REACTOR OPERATOR

Dear Mr. Hutchinson:

- This is in response to your letter dated September 1,1998,1CAN099801, concerning L

suspension of participation in the requalification program of John R. Eichenberger, NRC License No. SOP-43611-1, Docket No. 55-40708.

It is our understanding that Mr. Eichenberger will not participate in the Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 1, Licensed Operator Requalification Program due to his involvement with the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO), which is not to exceed 24 months. It is also our understanding that Mr. Eichenberger will be enrolled in an Accelerated Requalification Program,

[ considered additional training in accordance with 10 CFR 55.59(b)] as described in your letter, will be required to pass a comprehensive requalification examination meeting the requirements

- of 10 CFR 55.59, and will meet the requirements of 10 CFR 55.53(f) (1 and 2),10 CFR 55.21,.

10 CFR 55.23, and 10 CFR 26 prior to retuming to licensed duties.

We require that, before Mr. Eichenberger returns to licensed duties, you certify, in writing, to the Region IV office that Mr. Eichenberger has successfully completed the Accelerated Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 1, Licensed Operator Requalfication Program requirements in accordance with 10 CFR 55.59(b).

Please be advised that since Mr. Eichenberger will not participate in the Arkansas Nuclear One [

Requalification Program, Mr. Eichenberger shall not direct activities of licensed operators and  ;

shall not manipulate the controls of Arkansas Nuclear One, Unit 1, during this period of I A
