LICENSEE: Duke Power Company FACILITY: McGuire Nuclear Station, Units 1 and 2

SUBJECT:

SUMMARY

OF MAY 27, 1986 MEETING REGARDING MCGUIRE UNIT 1 STEAM GENERATOR TUBE SHOT PEENING PLANS AND MCGUIRE UNIT 2 TUBE INSPECTION RESULTS any (the licensee), Babcock On May 27, 1986, the NRC and Wilcox (B&W), and Metal Improvement Company met with Duke Power Comp (MIC) to discuss plans to l

perfom shot peening of the McGuire Unit 1 steam generator tubes during the i current refueling outage. Meeting attendees are listed in Enclosure 1.

lf Shot peening of the Unit 1 steam generator tubes is planned as a preventive

- measure against primary water stress corrosion cracking (PWSCC) within the i

tubesheet region. Basically, shot peening'is a process of surface mechanical treatment which improves a tube's resistance to PWSCC by replacing tube tensile stress with a thin compressive stress layer. The process is scheduled to begin in early June 1986, with B&W as contractor responsible for the steam generator's nuclear environment and MIC as subcontractor responsible for conduct of the shot peening operation. The meeting discussion l consisted of presentations of the infomation on the viewgraph slides shown as Enclosure 2.

The meeting also included a review of results of eddy current tests of Unit 2 steam generator tubes conducted during the current refueling outage. These results are shown in Enclosure 3.
