Gauge Source Holder DESCRIPTION:

The device is cylindrical in shape, 7-3/8-inches in height, and 4-1/2 inches in

- diameter'with a- 4-3/4 inch, . square, base plate. _ The steel base plate,1/4 of an inch thick, includes 4 mounting holes 5/16 of an inch in diameter, lhe steel cylinder has a 1/8 inch wall and a top plate 3/16 inch thick. .These components are joined by welds.

The cylinder is filled with lead shielding, which includes two cavities. A rectangular beam port,1_7/16_ inches by 2-7/16 inches (30 by 65') at the outer su; face of the device, tapers to its apex at th,e approximate position of the source in the "on" position. The other cavity consists of a vertical hole lined

-with 1/2 inch inside diameter steel tubing to accommodate-the source ror This : hole is.5-1/4 inches deep and is located on the vertical axis of the cylinder. The source is mounted at the bottom end of the source rod which is raised a . distance of_2-7/16 inches to expose the source at the apex of the beam

-port. - The bottom portion of the source rod, .3/8 of an inch in diameter and 2-1/4 inches _ in length, consists of Mallory-1000 metal. This is threaded to the upper portion of, the source rod co_nsisting of a-1/4 inch square, steel,-piece _ topped by a handle. A stop secured to the top plate by two screws has a 17/64 -inch square

' hole allowing passage of the 1/4. inch. square portion of the rod only. This prevents removal of the source and positions--it at the apex of the beam port.

1 A' set screw -in the stop is used to " lock" the source in either the "on" or "off" position. The source rod handle may be padlocked to a lock bar (welded to the top. plate) to lock the source in the "off". position.

LABELING:

A metal label 3-3/8 inches by 2-3/16 inches attached to the outside of the device 180* from the radiation. beam bears the following:

" CAUTION: RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL Cesium-137 50 mc Date of Measurement Model: 35-1101 BRUN CORPORATION, COLUMBUS, OHIO" m________

-0EVICE TYPE: . Gauge Source Holder LABELING (CONT'0):

The label is basically yellow in color with black lettering and a magenta radiation symbol.

A label attached to the device, opposite the beam port, indicates the source position as " SOURCE ON" and " SOURCE OFF" by arrows.

EXTERNAL RADIAliON LEVELS:

The radiation levels at one foot from the surface of the device containing 50 millicuries of cesium-137 are generally less than 1.5 mr/hr-with a maximum of about 2-1/2 mr/hr at a foot from the top surface of the device. This includes radiation levels for both the "on" and "off" positions of the source.

LIMITATIONS AND/0R OTHER CONSIDERATIONS OF USE:

The Brun Corporation has stated that they will install, survey, and leak test each device. They have also indicated a willingness to provide maintenance and repair services including relocation.

The Brun Corporation has not described any guards or shielding inherent in the device installation. Therefore, each individual applicant's proposed use of the device will have to be individually evaluated. -
